Can someone explain Q20? Where does it mention that some critics were biased with the previous interpretations of Malory's work?

I chose C due to the sentence "Part of this response was the natural reaction to the disturbance of set ideas." which looks like a rough rephrasing of the option.

Hi Zohair123,

Option C is
"conceptually displeased by the general interpretation that Vinaver rejected"

It means that critics were displeased by the concept (ie the fact that Malory’s eight romances are fundamentally unified) which was rejected by Vinaver. Which is clearly not the case as it seems like critics were displeased by Vinaver's interpretation and not by the interpretation that he had rejected.

Even I had chosen C and I am still not sure if this interpretation is correct. It would be helpful if someone could explain all the answers.

Have you got Q18 and Q19? Could you please explain them?

Look at the line "Part of this response was the natural reaction to the disturbance of set ideas" in which, "natural reaction" basically means bias, hence supporting answer B.

Additionally, the line "It is not quite a matter of disagreeing with the theory of independence, but of rejecting its implications" is stating that "conceptually" the critics do agree with Vinaver but disagree with the the specifics/components of it, therefore invalidating answer choice C.

Hope that helps!

Why isnt E the answer for the 1st question?
Quote:
It is not quite a matter of disagreeing with the theory of independence, but of rejecting its implications: that the romances may be taken in any or no particular order, that they have no cumulative effect, and that they are as separate as the works of a modern novelist

Hey,

Let me give you a hint:
Always consider a broader scope while answering the main purpose/point question. The whole passage should be taken into consideration.

Also please provide reasoning for rejecting A and choosing E. I'll help you.

Carcass sir,

Could you please provide the meaning of the sentence " Part of this response was the natural reaction to the disturbance of set ideas". I have a difficulty in understanding the same.

Part of this response was a reaction or a challenge to the standards or previous ideas or status quo.
