Quote:
"Over the past year, our late-night news program has devoted increased time to national news and less time to weather and local news. During this time period, most of the complaints received from viewers were concerned with our station's coverage of weather and local news. In addition, local businesses that used to advertise during our late-night news program have just canceled their advertising contracts with us. Therefore, in order to attract more viewers to the program and to avoid losing any further advertising revenues, we should restore the time devoted to weather and local news to its former level."
Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.

My essay:
In the passage, the writer argues that the increased time for national news led to less viewers. This is based on the premises that viewers are more interested in weather and local news. However, on deeper analysis, it becomes apparent that certain relevant aspects have not been taken into consideration, leading to a number of mistaken assumptions and logical flaws.
One such flaw is the assumption that the only reason that led the people to watch late night news is because weather and local news. However, there may be other reasons why they don't watch late night news program. Since these programs are late at night, maybe people are sleeping at that period of time. In order to strengthen the argument, more factual information on the reasons that attract viewers is needed, reasons which support the claim that weather and local news are the main reasons to attract viewers.
Moreover, the writer's argument is incorrectly based on the assumption that viewers are very interested with local and weather news. No information is provided regarding the number of complaints received. Whether the concerns were for or against the weather and local news of the late news show only, whether the coverage was of poor quality and did not include enough information. To overcome this flaw, the argument should contain factual information about the people's opinion of the coverage and their preferences of news in late night shows.
The writer also does not present a correlation between increased time for national news and cancelled advertising contracts. It may be possible that local businesses have found cheaper and more effective ways of advertising in other television channels or media forms. Thus the manager's opinion of retaining ad revenues from late night news by increasing weather coverage may not hold true. To render this argument more valid, the writer should approach different adverstisement agences not restricting themselves to local business only to sponsor the late night program.
After closer examination of the passage presented, it is apparent that there are several logical flaws. The recommandations in the essay show how the argument may be strengthened and made more logically sound
