Greetings guys. I schedule to take the GRE Test on June 19th. Being not a native English Speaker the Writing and Verbal sections have me a little anxious. I am looking forward to score a 4.0 in Writing. If you don't mind, I would like to have your opinion on this practice Essay. I am grateful for any tip or recommendation.
One of the firsts subjects in which countries are compared is the quality of education at school level. Likewise, how well instructed is the young population is an indicator of how advanced is the nation and the society. In this matter, there are many ways to achieve high levels of education: one, certainly, is a homogenous nation-wide curriculum. In my opinion, it is a great policy to stablish a common and solid base of knowledge in school education provided that this sets an equal ground for opportunities deriving from knowledge, secures a sustainable democracy and early development conditions for the country. In this essay, two specific circumstances will be overviewed: political consequences and the “college - high school gap”.
First, well educated people has enough understanding of the nation’s issues to make necessary political actions. This can be reflected in the election of political leaders, donations to specific programs and supporting righteous protests. In this modern era, the access to education is granted in the majority of countries. Nevertheless, whether or not it is quality education and it is the same for everyone goes beyond the spectrum of the interpretation of this human right. Giving people knowledge since their early years ensures better probabilities in their decision making during their lifetime. This is a measure of equality and facilitates that opportunities are granted to all, not just a privileged majority. For example: if a country guarantees good education to all sectors in society, the access to higher education is possible, no matter how economically deprived an individual is.
Second, by having a nation-wide curriculum, Universities could prepare the first years of higher education adapted a “single” level of instruction. This would make the difference between high school level and college less abysmal, enabling the possibility of a gradual increase in the difficulty; which might lead to a reduction of the “drop-out” number in the firsts semesters. If a student is well prepared for college, the necessity of going over the basics of his instructions is eliminated, allowing the student to focus in the campus life, new possibilities and branches of his chosen field.
However, this measure can be interpreted as a strive to weakening individual’s choice by not being able to choose some specializations in high school. This would not be true if a common “minimum” of subjects is required and, after that, the student is free to take some elective courses. This policy should not have to be oppressing, instead, can be quite freeing for many.
