Let x be the angle that's next to angle b and INSIDE the triangle.
So, we know that x + b = 180
Or we can write x = 180 - b
Let y be the angle that's next to angle c and INSIDE the triangle.
So, we know that y + c = 180
Or we can write y = 180 - c
Since angles a, x and y are the 3 angles in the triangle, we can write: a + x + y = 180
Now replace x and y to get: a + (180 - b) + (180 - c) = 180
Simplify to get: a - b - c + 360 = 180
Rearrange to get a + 180 = b + c
AHA, this is EXACTLY what we are comparing.
