C. Maximum score among the girls is at most 2.2 more than the maximum score among boys

The key words here are "at most"

This means, it COULD be the case that the maximum score among the girls is exactly 2.2 more than the maximum score among boys
Or it COULD be the case that the maximum score among the girls is 1.5 more than the maximum score among boys
Or it COULD be the case that the maximum score among the girls is equal to the maximum score among boys
Or it COULD be the case that the maximum score among the girls is LESS THAN the maximum score among boys

Given all of this, here are two possible outcomes:
CASE I:
There are two girls in the class, and their scores are: 1 and 33.6 (for a range of 32.6)
There are two boys in the class, and their scores are: 11 and 31.4 (for a range of 20.4)
When we combine all of the scores we get {1, 11, 31.4, 33.6}, which means the range = 32.6

CASE II:
There are two girls in the class, and their scores are: 1 and 33.6 (for a range of 32.6)
There are two boys in the class, and their scores are: 50 and 70.4 (for a range of 20.4)
When we combine all of the scores we get {1, 33.6, 50, 70.4}, which means the range = 69.4

Does that help?

We know that range of boys=20.4 and range of girls=32.6. From this we can assume variables and say that a–b=20.4 and c–d=32.6. The total range, which we need to find, is nothing but c–b.

A- Median is the middle value. Range is max–min. This doesn't help.
B- This esentially states that a=d+4. Now we can say that c=32.6+d and b=aa–20.4. This means that 32.6+d–(a–20.4) => 32.6+d–(d+4–20.4)= 49. Correct.
C- This states that c=2.2a and since b=a–20.4 we can say 2.2a–(a–20.4)=1.2a+20.4. Since we don't know the value of a, this is incorrect.

How did you interpret we have to find c-b? please explain
