In his unexpurgated autobiography, Mark Twain commented freely on the flaws and foibles of his country, making some observations so _______ that his heirs and editors feared they would damage Twain’s reputation if not withheld.

what kind of observations about his country would damage Mark Twain's reputation if they are not withheld? Well we can guess they would be harsh observations. This is further supported by the fact that Mark Twain commented freely on the flaws and foibles of his country. The only choice that conveys the meaning of harshness is acerbic. Plus all other words in the choice list have positive connotations. And a premonitory observation need not necessarily cause a damage to the reputation.
