This involves everyone's favorite right-triangle, 3-4-5. That tells us immediately that BD is 4. Now what?
Because the larger triangle CAE is similar to the smaller CBD, and AE is 8, we know that every side of CAE will be double the corresponding side of CBD. That means that CE is 10, and since DE = CE - CD, DE = 5.
