It is a long drawn process friend. The key is to enjoy the journey of learning vocab. If you want to do it for the sake of getting good GRE score , you will hardly succeed. Learning good vocabulary is very very important in your overall career development. Even when i started i had a decent vocabulary but certainly not that good.
I can give you some tips but before that i would like to know how good is your existing vocabulary?

Well my vocab is moderate, that's what i think, but never really paid heed to evaluate it.
How'd you suggest to evaluate the same on a GRE level?

Sorry for the late reply!
I will assume the worst possible scenario and give you ideas to get to the highest possible order of vocabulary! Okay keeping jargons aside!

1. I would recommend the book of Norman Lewis ('Word Power Made Easy') to you! Its cheap and very very effective (from my personal experience). The book will change your perception towards the English language and will help you absorb a lot more when you read.
2. Start reading regularly. Read newspapers (for example- Hindu, TOI, etc), read scientific journals regularly (even twice a week will do).
3. Watch British drama series or good US ones eg: Da Vinci's Demons, Game of Thrones, House of Cards etc. They use a lot of good and esoteric vocabularies and its both fun and learn at the same time.
4. Application is must. Just learning stuff is never enough

To test how good you have progressed in building vocabulary its best always to look for practice softwares like http://gre.graduateshotline.com/.
You can find better ones too! At the end of the day learning the meaning of a word is not enough as it was in the Old GRE pattern. The bigger context and applicability of the word is very very important to get those critical 3 blank Text Completion Questions right.

Somehow it slipped through my mind!
Yes so i looked in your profile and i must say you have your work cut out for applying to MS in US. The US universities are very competitive and you will be fighting with very best of the best. Most of your marks are below 75 % and that makes your chances a bit low. Personally i believe that Board marks and CGPA are not really an indicator of someone's aptitude or intellect but in competitive fields like MS in Computer Science it really helps to stand out.
Your lack of scientific publications doesn't help matters too. But you can increase your chances a lot if you can show a good GRE score. In your case i am talking about 325+. In GRE anything above 320 is good, but you need to compensate for your CGPA and board marks so 325+ is a must. It will surely give you fighting chance.
In your case, MIS will be a better option because the weightage on marks is a bit relaxed than MS in CS.
If you work hard and smart there is no reason you won't get a good GRE score. So i recommend you to prepare hard for GRE and boost your chances!
