What made you choose A? The passage mentions that there the black slavery was entrenched by the time colonies started fighting against the British. But, it is no where mentioned that there were organised anti slavery societies before the War of Independence.

20. Which of the following statements regarding American society in the years immediately following the War of Independence is best supported by the passage?

(A) The unexpected successes of the antislavery societies led to their gradual demise in the Eastern states.
(B) Some of the newly independent American states had begun to make progress toward abolishing slavery. (Supported by the passage see my explanation below.)
(C) Americans like Abigail Adams became disillusioned with the slow progress of emancipation and gradually abandoned the cause.
(D) Emancipated slaves gradually were accepted in the Eastern states as equal members of American society.
(E) The abolition of slavery in many Eastern states was the result of close cooperation between religious groups and free Blacks.

In the passage it says after the War of independence, Easters states planned to gradual emancipation of slavery. Thus choice B is the strongest possible answer.

Here is the quote from the passage; " In fact, within several years of the end of the War of Independence, most of the Eastern states had made provisions for the gradual emancipation of slaves."

Hope it helps.

"By the time the American colonists took up arms against Great Britain in order to secure their independence, the institution of Black slavery was deeply entrenched." What I understand from this is that before the War of independence American colonists were part of the GB colonies and in GB American colonists Black Slavery was entrenched. But after the War of Independence, "most of the Eastern states had made provisions for the gradual emancipation of slaves.". So It can be inferred that these states are not a part of GB colonists because in GB colonists slavery was entrenched but in those states, it is not. We can also infer that these states are newly formed because of the fact that it's mentioned after the war of independence.

I hope it makes it clear.

By the time the American colonists took up arms against Great Britain in order to secure their independence, the institution of Black slavery was deeply entrenched. But the contradiction inherent in this situation was, for many, a source of constant embarrassment. "It always appeared a most iniquitous scheme to me," Abigail Adams wrote her husband in 1774, "to fight ourselves for what we are daily robbing and plundering from those who have as good a right to freedom as we have."

19. According to the passage, the War of Independence was embarrassing to some Americans for which of the following reasons?

III. - It involved a struggle based on inconsistencies in the participants' conceptions of freedom.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Answer choice three is a devious trap answer.

By decoding the question, we see that it is asking us to search for information that is stated in the reading passage.

If we look at what is said in the passage, nothing specific about the concept of freedom is stated. Answer choice three is an inference we can make as a reader, not something that is mentioned in the passage. Since this is not an inference question, it is thus incorrect.

The question is

19. According to the passage, the War of Independence was embarrassing to some Americans for which of the following reasons?

Option III

It involved a struggle based on inconsistencies in the participants' conceptions of freedom.

The Americans involved in the civil war had a different view about freedom and its real meaning. The war for independency followed this view

The passage cites ONLY the following

Many Americans besides Abigail Adams were struck by the inconsistency of their stand during the War of Independence

Many Americans were confused on which side they stood: if they were pro-independence or against independence from England. But NOTHING is explicitly mentioned about the meaning of freedom

III is , therefore, wrong
