Perhaps "for" was not the best choice in this sentence. It would have been more clear if it had been a word that marked a negation like "but."

Their air of cheerful self-sacrifice and endless complaisance won them undeserved praise, for their seeming gallantry was wholly motivated by a (i) _______ wish to avoid conflict of any sort.

They had an "air" of cheerful self-sacrifice and endless complaisance (willing to do something to please others). And this won them undeserved praise, that is they were not worthy of praise. And why was it undeserved? Because their seeming (not real) gallantry was wholly motivated by a cowardly wish to avoid conflict of any sort. Therefore, the correct word choice is craven.

The sentence is asking us to explain why the praise was undeserved. It is because their gallantry was motivated by cowardliness or any other negative quality.

On the contrary, the "for" is perfect, because it gives a reason for the undeserved praise!

That seeming changed the blank. Seeming is generally used for contrast?

Not really

it means apparent but it depends on the context.

I do not see a net contrast based on that words.

The fact we need a contrast here is given by

for their seeming gallantry was wholly motivated by a (i) _______ wish to avoid conflict of any sort.
