Component H, a crucial part of the motherboard in a popular new laptop computer, is thought to require an operating temperature of below 70 degrees Celsius to function optimally. Recent tests, however, have shown that Component H performs quite well at temperatures up to 80 degrees Celsius. Therefore, if Component H is the most heat-sensitive component in the laptop, it may be possible to lower the laptop’s battery use by reducing its fan speed. Users would then enjoy more battery life without damage to their laptops. But further tests are necessary, since Component K, another part of the new laptop, has not been tested at temperatures above 70 degrees Celsius due to the previous restrictions for Component H.
In the argument, the two boldfaced portions play which of the following roles?
A) The first is an assertion that the argument argues against; the second is the position supported by the argument. B) The first supports the position that the argument argues against; the second is that position. C) The first provides reasoning for the position the argument opposes; the second provides additional support for that position. D) The first is the argument’s position; the second is the position that the argument argues against. E) The first is a rebuttal of the argument’s position; the second is the argument’s position.

The position of the argument is that further testing is needed before the laptop’s fan speed is reduced. Therefore, it is arguing against the position to lower the fan speed. The first boldfaced portion gives reasoning that this may be done by saying that if Component H is the most heat-sensitive, then its viability is the crucial factor. The second boldfaced portion provides additional reasoning for the argument’s position by outlining the benefit of adopting the position.
