GIVEN: The perimeters of R and S are equal.
Perimeter of rectangle R = x + 2x + x + 2x = 6x
This means the perimeter of square S = 6x
So, the length of EACH SIDE of square S = 6x/4 = 1.5x
Area of rectangle R = (x)(2x) = 2x²
Area of square S = (1.5x)² = 2.25x²
We have:
QUANTITY A: 2x²
QUANTITY B: 2.25x²
At this point, if we aren't already convinced that quantity B is greater, we can also recognize that, since x² must be POSITIVE, we can safely divide both quantities by x² to get:
QUANTITY A: 2
QUANTITY B: 2.25
Answer: B
