Question part of the project GRE Quantitative Reasoning Daily Challenge - (2021) EDITIONGRE - Math BookLet L = Leo's CURRENT weight
Let B = his brother's CURRENT weight
Currently, their combined weight is 340 poundsWe can write:
L + B = 340If Leo gains 10 pounds, he will weigh 50% more than his brotherIn other words (10 pounds more than L) = (50% more than B)
Rewrite as:
L + 10 = 1.5BWhat is Leo's current weight? We have:
L + B = 340L + 10 = 1.5BTake top equation and solve for B to get:
B = 340 - LNow take
L + 10 = 1.5B and replace B with 340-L to get: L + 10 = 1.5(340 - L)
Expand right side to get: L + 10 = 510 - 1.5L
Add 1.5L to both sides: 2.5L + 10 = 510
Subtract 10 from both sides: 2.5L = 500
Solve: L = 500/2.5 = 200
