This is a question that appears in the GRE Math Tests book - Kolby, Jeff
NOVA`S.

I attach the official response, which is not clear to me. For me it should be any value between 0 and 12 (maximum possible area)

OA: We are given that in triangle ABC, CA = 4 and CB = 6. The area of the triangle is greatest when the sides
form a right angle, and least when the sides align in a line. When the sides form a right-angle, the area is
1/2  base  height = 1/2  4  6 = 12; and when they are aligned in a line, the area is 0 because the height
is zero. Hence, the permissible range is 0 through 12. Select choices in this range. The answer is (D) and
(E).

Fixed the question.

I saw the question in NOVA's as well. It may possible that it's a typo.
However, I would suggest you to practice from official sources only.

In this forum you'll find plenty of official questions.
