A recent state survey of human resources found that the age to which secretarial school graduates are expected to live is four years in excess of the age to which other graduates of high school are expected to live. One possible conclusion is that secretarial school. attendance is beneficial to one's health.


To evaluate the conclusion above, it would be most important to know the answer to which of the following questions?

(A) Have the average age of new high school graduates and the average age of new secretarial school graduates recently increased?
(B) Do some secretarial school graduates have college degrees?
(C) Given that women have a greater life expectancy than men, what are the relative proportions of men and women among high school and secretarial school graduates?
(D) Given that women have a greater life expectancy than men, what proportion of all women attend secretarial school?
(E) Has the proportion of high school graduates who attend secretarial school increased in recent years?

This "possible conclusion" is suspect at best. I assume that those who attend secretarial school are a different population than those who attend other high schools. Let's look at the choices.

(A) The conclusion is about overall life expectancy, not life expectancy after graduation. So we don't care how old students are when they graduate, only how old they live to be.

(B) Since a college degree does not affect life expectancy, we don't care about whether or not anyone has one.

(C) Gender does affect life expectancy. If all the secretarial school graduates are women and all the other high school graduates are men, then that would explain the discrepancy in life expectancy without having to say that secretarial school is good for your health. These proportions are thus relevant to know.

(D) We would have to make too many additional assumptions to make this choice relevant. More importantly, we would also need to know the proportion of men who attend secretarial school.

(E) Graduating from high school has no affect on life expectancy, so this doesn't provide us any relevant information.

Fact - Life of secretarial school graduates = 4+ graduates of high school

Conclusion - secretarial school attendance is the reason behind more life age.

We need to answer the answer choices questions in Yes and No. This will somehow go with the conclusion or against it.

To evaluate the conclusion above, it would be most important to know the answer to which of the following questions?

(A) Have the average age of new high school graduates and the average age of new secretarial school graduates recently increased?
Yes - the average age increased. Does it have any effect on the argument? No. Hence discard it.

(B) Do some secretarial school graduates have college degrees?
Yes - they have college degrees. Does it have any effect on the argument? No. Hence discard it.

(C) Given that women have a greater life expectancy than men, what are the relative proportions of men and women among high school and secretarial school graduates?
Yes, If there are more women in high school than in secretarial school, then life expectancy could be high for high school students. Keep it
No, If there are less women in high school than in secretarial school, then life expectancy could be low for high school students. Keep it.

(D) Given that women have a greater life expectancy than men, what proportion of all women attend secretarial school?
Yes. more proportion attended. Does it change the fact that secretarial school life is more because of attendance? No because we do not know the proportion of high school women attending school. Hence, Discard it

(E) Has the proportion of high school graduates who attend secretarial school increased in recent years?
Yes - Yes the proportion increased. Does it have any effect on the argument? No. Hence, discard it.

Since answer choice C gave both answers, it should be the answer.
