However, if we focus in the last part of the sentence
Dylan's unwavering belief in the priority of self-interest was tantamount to (i) ______ he took it as axiomatic that, since he could never be sure of others' beliefs or desires, he should focus only on his own.
Then we do need a word that reflects this sentiment. I.E egoism is the right word. Only B is a synonym of this word
B is the right choice

why not A? As A and B are synonyms, how to be sure B is the right one?
