Alexander Solzhenitsyn's many novels had a certain tone. He spent many years in Siberian prison languishing, therefore the tone must be related to languish.
Bleak & grim are good fits for the blank. Hence option A and F are correct answers.

The question is not so difficult and is not a great question as well.
The only pair choices to fit the meaning are A and F.
The sentence says that the real reason of the tone of his novels is the fact the author was prisoned for a long time in a Siberian Gulag.
From this we can easily infer that were not a holiday or vacation. Therefore, the tone must be sad or grim.
