In the game of chess, the Knight can make any of the moves displayed in the diagram to the right. If a Knight is the only piece on the board, what is the greatest number of spaces from which not all 8 moves are possible?

Now, for a Knight to be able to move 8 possible moves the Knight should have at least 2 squares in each direction to be able to complete that.
This means that the knight cannot be in any of the squares where we don't have at least 2 squares to move in each direction possible.
So, the Knight cannot be in rows 1,2,7,8 and columns a, b, g, h

This means that the Knight can be there only in the center blue squares, which are 4*4 = 16
So, the greatest number of spaces from which not all 8 moves are possible = 64 - 16 = 48
So, Answer will be D

We can see from the figure above that the only spaces that allows the knight to move in 8 different positions, are those in the center of the chessboard.
More precisely, all the 16 spaces forming the 4x4 square in the center of the chessboard.
Being the chessboard formed by 8x8 = 64 spaces,
the number of spaces we are looking for to answer the problem is 64 - 16 = 48.
Hence answer is D.
