It is covered by the syllabus, but the solution is way too long to solve as per the steps given (over 3 mins, that too if u are fast) and there are no viable shortcuts as well.

I'm no expert though and these are my 2 cents on the discussion thread.

Perhaps a faster solution could be

* calculate the number of elements for each integer
* split the 100 elements into 2 groups of 50
* calculate the median for each group of 50 and take the difference

Apparently i solved it with the range of 1 to 8. And applying boxplot concept, it worked.

Step 1. Calculate the number of balls that belong to each group 1-8 using the formula given in the question.


N(1)=18−(1−4)2=18−9=9
N(2)=18−(2−4)2=18−4=14
N(3)=18−(3−4)2=18−1=17
N(4)=18−(4−4)2=18−0=18
N(5)=18−(5−4)2=18−1=17
N(6)=18−(6−4)2=18−4=14
N(7)=18−(7−4)2=18−9=9
N(8)=18−(8−4)2=18−16=2

Step 2. Calculate the median of the whole set
Step 3. Calculate the median of the lower and upper halves respectively
Step 4. Subtract Q3 from Q1.
