The maximum number of the students who took both algebra and chemistry will be the least f the two values why? because that is the region that could overlap. Considering that we are not given that all students have taken algebra or chemistry.
If we were given that all students take atleast on of the two then we would have used the below formula:
Total number of students= Students in Algebra+students in chemistry-students in both
236=142+121- students in both
263-236=students in both
Students in both=27
But as we are not given this we can consider there are students who take neither. Thus 121.
