Let's use equivalent ratios in the form salmon/halibut
Robert caught salmon and halibut in a ratio of 4:5
So, the ratio is 4/5
Robert caught 12 salmon
Let H = # of halibut caught
So, the ratio is 12/H
So, we can write: 4/5 = 12/H
Cross multiply to get: 4H = (5)(12)
Simplify: 4H = 60
Solve: H = 15
So, Robert caught 12 salmon and 15 halibut
TOTAL number of fish caught = 12 + 15 = 27

Explanation
Make a ratio box and fill in what you know: the ratio and the total number of salmon.
You then total number of fish in the ratio row, and find your multiplier in the salmon column.
Multiply down to figure out the actual total number of fish, which is 27.
