Looking at the graph, in country X the unemployment rate in 2003 is 3% and in 2004 it is 5.7%. So the percent change is highest in this case.

I got option D. From 2004-2006 in country Y, the percent changes from about 8.5% to 5%, making that percent change 3.5%, which is greater than the 2.7% change from 2003 to 2004 in country X. Can someone explain how the answer is B.

could you explain to me how you calculated that change ??

For country Y during 2004, it is at about 8.5% and 5% during 2006, or am I missing something? I tried to upload the attachment where I circled it but it won't let me.

Hi There!

I think there are certain restrictions on this i.e either you have to be a member for a year or create 20 posts, you won't be able to post before completing either of the two.

The percent change in unemployment was greatest for which one of the following?

A. Country X, from 2000 to 2002

B. Country X, from 2003 to 2004

C. Country X, from 2008 to 2009

D. Country Y, from 2004 to 2006

E. Country Y, from 2005 to 2007

I also thought the answer is D. As we can derive from the graph that in 2004, country X was on 8.5% of unemployment and then decreased to 5% in 2006. Thus giving us a change of 3.5% while option has a smaller increase.
Option B suggests Country X, from 2003 to 2004 which is 3% and 5.5% respectively. Thus the change is of 2.5% which is lesser than that derived from option D.
Other options are clearly eliminated as they have smaller change comparatively.
Is something wrong with my approach because I don't understand how the answer is option B?

Country X is the red line

Country Y is the blue line

Country X in 2003 was at 3 and in 2004 was at 5

% change is = \(\frac{change}{original}\)*100

% change = \(\frac{5.5-3}{3}=83.3\)% in change

Country Y in 2004 was 8.5 and in 2006 was 5

% change = \(\frac{8.5-5}{8.5} = 41.1\) % in change

\(83.3 > 41.1\)

B is the answer.

I do not know why is so complicated. It is there ...........

I would like to add an alternative approach also

You just need visualization of the graph

the red portion is way steeper than the blue portion. Clearly

The change in B > of the change in D
