A mixture weighs 7.8 grams. It consists of ingredients X, Y, and Z in the ratio 2:5:6 2 + 5 + 6 = 13 So we can say that: 2/13 of the mixture is ingredient X 5/13 of the mixture is ingredient Y 6/13 of the mixture is ingredient Z
How many fewer grams of ingredient X than ingredient Z are in the mixture? Weight of ingredient X in the mixture = 2/13 of 7.8 grams = (2/13)(7.8) = 1.2 grams Weight of ingredient Z in the mixture = 6/13 of 7.8 grams = (6/13)(7.8) = 3.6 grams
