Sir, can you please tell how the word Generous comes into play, why not be critical to be accepted in place of generous.

I do not know. In the sense that based on the sequence the author of the post did put the words into the tags, it seemed the right sequence.

Basically, it created a mess I tried to fix.

I hope he replies soon and sees if the order is correct.

we could waste our time debating which is which

In this question, the author is classifying between two types of critics: one who who criticizes harshly and the other is generous critics meaning not criticizing harshly. So when filling the last blank, we put generous to substitute for the 2nd type of critics.

We have two huge clues at the end of the sentence, and you should use them to leverage your options to reach the right solution

I am quite surprised by this book review, and while I am not certain the author of the article intended to be as _________ as she comes across, it’s clear she did not enjoy the novel. During a time when critics of fiction are often excessively __________, however, it is refreshing to read something sincere, however severe it may be.

Now the sentence can be rephrased as

1) I am surprised by the review of the book

2) She did not liked the novel

3) During times when the review can be biased, it can be softened to please the editor or the publisher to sell more copies, and it can be not trustworthy..........

4) However, it is refreshing that even though her review is sincere and honest to the bone, it is also severe

We need blanks that reflect these sentiments

I am not sure that the reviewer wanted to be as severe as she appeared doing the review but also is positive that the review itself is honest in a way really true when usually the reviews of a book are somehow misleading and NOT honest as it is in this case

The only two words that we have to say that the review is severe is B and to show that in general the reviews are not so honest as they should be is to use D. The other review or in general they are generous, or soft or not totally honest

I hope this helps

I got the first blank.... Like for first blank “ She did not liked the novel” is a clue.... But I didn’t get the second as there is however since it is contrast and written sincere after that then before however there should be -ve word isn’t so ?

Sir

you have goo skills in TC. I see.

However, in my humble opinion, students tend to rely too heavily in the positive and negative words. This is a good strategy, though. Nothing to say on that oor that it is wrong. Of course. Not in my intention.

However, if you see my explanation above I think the best way is

1) using multiple strategies, it depends a lot on the context and the sentence we are dealing with
2) The meaning of the sentence is always our hallmark when we are solving a problem: both quant and verbal

I mean: using the + and - way of thinking is too narrow and you loose the big picture.

please see my explanation above and if still you are in trouble please do not hesitate to ask once again. I will help you without any concern :)

Actually, I read that Solution before, also, but I didn’t understand that time, but now I read it again. I guess you’re talking about “ it is refreshing to read something sincere, however severe it may be.” as this is sincere and also severe means the critics are harsh as well as honest.

Or the explanation is that critics are harsh and generous. Usually, they are not when a person wants to sell more copies. ?

But how did you came up with this story “ it can be softened to please the editor or the publisher to sell more copies, and it can be not trustworthy”. I mean I couldn’t able to interpret the right way.

I am not sure why the review of this specific book is in that way. Not sure why it is harsh.

However, in a time when book reviews are generously written to please the author and the editor who wants to sell the book, it is refreshing to see a harsh (severe, merciless) yet honest review.

The translation of the original sentence above is that.

I hope now is very clear to you
