Among the answer choices only the option D (Realize) will fit. Other options are too far and evidences were provided to support it.

Hello, can you explain why the answer is D ? Honestly, I am struggling about choosing A, D or E. These concepts sound like the same thing to me.

Testing on a small sample number of people or on a small scale the effects of a chemical is called pilot experiment or trial.

We do need to realize which are in concrete these effects.

D is the answer

Data concerning the effects on a small population of high concentrations of a potentially hazardous chemical are frequently used to (i) realize which are the effects on a much wider scale the effects on a large population of lower amounts of the same chemical.

I hope this way is much more clear to you.

Ask for further assistance.

The question drops a few hints. In the first half it talks about "Data concerning" in particular and also on a small population, which means they are studying a small sample of data to later *understand* the effects on a larger population of lower amounts of same chemical. So our million dollar word should align with understand. Looking at options you can easily eliminate B and D which mean to correct something wrong or augment which means add on. Option A verify would be to validate but we are yet to have a concrete result because we haven't understood yet so A is eliminated. Option C predict too is far fetched from the word understand/study, as it takes it further another step by forecasting based on understanding.

Carcass could you explain why verify isn't the right choice, it seems that we can verify the effect of the small population on the big population, for me.
Can you enlighten me?

Data concerning the effects on a small population of high concentrations of a potentially hazardous chemical are frequently used to (i) ____ the effects on a large population of lower amounts of the same chemical.

In you read carefully the sentence is not that much difficult.

The sentence can be reworded in the following way

We have the chemicals and we use a certain amount of data (numbers, statistics, and so forth) to estimate the effects of these chemicals on a SMALL portion of the population.

These data are helpful to realize a PROJECTION. I.E. what would happen to a GREATEST portion of the population

We took what happens , for example, to 10,000 people and we try to figure out the same scenario on 1,000,000 of people.

It is the same thing with the vaccines: before is tested on 10 persons, then on 1000, and then 25,000 or 100,000. If the data are cogent and promising then the effects 99% are the same on a vast example of population taken into account

We do have to verify the data , we have to realize what we do have on a small scale and what is the scenario on the LARGEST scale and if the projection overlap or deviate.

I hope this helps
