There is sufficient hint to suggest that the author is questioning a long held notion the word conventional conveys a similar meaning

The author is indicating that a conventionally trained art critic is no better than a layman, in which he means that a layman critics doesn't look at the conventional theories but just critics the art based on first glance in an instinct or instinctively
