Given: 5x – 8 = 12
Replace x with y + 3 (since we're told x = y + 3) to get: 5(y + 3) – 8 = 12
Add 8 to both sides: 5(y + 3) = 20
Divide both sides by 5 to get: y + 3 = 4
Subtract 3 from both sides: y = 1
Answer: B
