Jason has a handful of dimes and quarters. There are a total of 22 coins. If the total value of the coins is $3.25, how many dimes does Jason have? (Dime = 10 cents, quarter 25 cents)
A. 7
B. 8
C. 11
D. 12
E. 15
Let D = the number of dimes Jason has
Since there are 22 coins in total we can write.....
22 - D = the number of quarters Jason has
Dimes are worth $0.10 each, and quarters are worth $0.25 each.
So we can write: 0.1D + 0.25(22 - D) = 3.25
Expand: 0.1D + 5.5 - 0.25D = 3.25
Simplify: 5.5 - 0.15D = 3.25
Subtract 5.5 from both sides: -0.15D = -2.25
Solve: D = -2.25/-0.15 = 15
Answer: E
