We can solve this question using matching operations (my favorite Quantitative Comparison strategy)
Given:
Quantity A: \((x+y)(x-y)\)
Quantity B: \(x^2+y^2\)
Expand and simplify Quantity A to get:
Quantity A: \(x^2-y^2\)
Quantity B: \(x^2+y^2\)
Subtract \(x^2\) from both quantities:
Quantity A: \(-y^2\)
Quantity B: \(y^2\)
Add \(y^2\) to both quantities:
Quantity A: \(0\)
Quantity B: \(2y^2\)
If \(y = 0\), then the two quantities are equal
If \(y = 1\), then the two quantities are NOT equal
Answer: D
