Simple explanation is that the area of a triangle is equal to .5(B*H). Quantity A has the base (AC) + the height (BE). Quantity B has the base (BC) + the height (AD) as well, but from a different direction. Since this is the base and height of the same ABC triangle, the answer is C (equal) since we can assume the area is the same and thus the base and height values COMBINED will be the same (the base and height are in a ratio to eachother).

On the other hand, had the question not given us the 90 degree angles (thus AD and BE not necessarily being the heights) or had it asked if BE = AD or AC = BC, the answer would have been D since you can't make geometric assumptions about a drawing being "to scale" on the GRE.

A key here is to note that these are base and height. Product of base and height is area.
