Where is the mistake made then in the work below?

a+b=x
a=b+y

Therefore, (b+y) + b = x
b=(x-y)/2

Here, a and b are the individual amounts of time in hours taken by A and B, respectively and x is the time taken in hours when A and B work together.

So,
x≠a+b

Here is a simpler path to the solution.

Let t = number of hours that B takes to finish the same work alone.

From common sense, B must take longer than A and B working together. Therefore, t > x.

If we subtract from x or divide it with a number > 1, then we are making it smaller. Therefore, t > x > x-y / 2.
