Re: It takes 1 pound of flour to make y cakes. The price of flour is w dol [#permalink]

Solution -
There are two ways to solve this problem. The first method is the algebra method and the second method is the plug-in strategy.

Algebra Method -
In the question it says, 1 pound of flour is needed for y cakes.
So, (1/y) pound of flour it takes to make 1 cake.
It has been given in the question that the price of flour is w dollars for x pounds.
So, 1 pound of flour costs (w/x) dollars.
Therefore, 1 cake costs (w/xy) dollars.
The correct answer option is C.

Plug-in Strategy -
We plug in the value of y = 5
Thus, 1 pound of flour makes 5 cakes.
Let us also plug-in the values for w and x, where w = 6 and x = 2.
Thus, 2 pounds of flour costs 6 dollars.
Therefore, it will cost 6 dollars to make 10 cakes and hence, 1 cake will cost 0.60 dollars. Here, 0.60 dollars is my target answer.
We plug-in the values of w, x and y in the answer choices to check which option gives my target answer.
Only option C gives the value as 0.60 dollars i.e. (w/xy)= (6/2*5)= 6/10= 0.60 dollars.
The correct answer option is C.

Answer Choice - C
