One would expect scientists to be very excited (or electrified) about the unexpected discovery, which overturned long-held beliefs. Exacerbated (made worse) and impugned (criticized as false) don’t fit the logic of the sentence. Reinforced preconceived notions is the opposite of what is indicated in the sentence, as is mitigated current expectations.
