Total score \(= 720\)
Score in first test \(= x\) & in second test \(= 720 - x\)
Thrice the scores of his first test were \(160\) more than the score of his second test.
\(3x = 720 - x + 160\)
\(4x = 880\)
\(x = 220\)

We can solve the question using either one variable or two variables.
Here is a 1-variable solution:
Let x = the score on the first test
So, 3x = (score on the second test) + 160, since "thrice the score of his first test was 160 more than the score of his second test"
In other words: 3x - 160 = score on the second test
Since the sum of the two scores is 720, we can write: x + (3x - 160) = 720
Simplify: 4x - 160 = 720
Blam: : 4x = 880
Kapow: x = 220
Answer: A
