Which is an equation of the preceding graph?

Indicate all such equations

(A) \(y = –x^2 + 6x – 5\)
(B) \(y = –x^2 + 6x + 5\)
(C) \(y = x^2 – 6x – 5\)
(D) \(y = x^2 – 6x + 5\)
(E) \(y = –(x – 3)^2 + 4\)
(F) \(y = –(x – 3)^2 – 4\)

Detailed explanation would be appreciated.

Carcass, should the solution of the equation be 1 and 5? Only B has solution 1, and 5? Can you please explain why B is wrong?

Quote:
The graph of a parabola with vertex (h, k) that opens downward has equation \(y = -(x - h)^2 + k\) . The graph in the figure is a parabola with vertex (3,4), opening down. Thus, the equation is \(y = -(x - 3)^2 + 4\). Select (E). Select (A) because y =-(x - 3)^2 + 4 implies that y \(= -(x^2-6x+9)+4=-x^2+6x-9+5=- x^2+6x-5\).

Carcass, thank you for explanation. How would you interpret x-intercepts for this parabola (1, and 5)? My understanding is that 1, and 5 are solutions of quadratic equation.
