First, simplify the expression by converting 1 quart into 2 pints.
A half pint of soda is equal to a quarter (1/4) of the punch, meaning the punch/soda ratio is 3:1.
The question asks how much soda is in 1/4 (a quarter) of the punch.
Thus, we get the answer by taking the proportion of soda we found (1/4) and dividing by 4, which is the same as multiplying by 1/4. (1/4)(1/4)= 1/16.
