For the first blank, the clue is in here: the cutting remarks that won him renown

The sentence is basically saying that, although Oscar got sudden fame because of his harsh remarks, he was very poor in the last stage of his life.

Re: In his youth, Oscar Wilde catapulted to sudden fame both bec [#permalink]
In his youth, Oscar Wilde catapulted to sudden fame both because of and despite his (i)_________ witticisms; however, the cutting remarks that won him renown also led to his financial and physical ruin, and he died (ii)_________ and sickly in a shabby Parisian hotel.

The phrase "the cutting remarks that won him renown" tells us that the word for the first blank should be acerbic.

Next we are told that his cutting remarks also led to his financial and physical ruin. So the word for the second blank should be impecunious, since the physical ruin is covered by "sickly".
