Why the ii) blank be cautious, and iii) blank be somewhat unguarded? The idea that he writes even recondite (little known) topics with caution, gives the paradox that when he writes informally he becomes somewhat unguarded, why isn't this inference correct?

The meaning of the sentence is


His writing is quite surprising: even for those who effortlessly can recognize the most arcane and unusual writings, those same people admit that his way of writing became more formal, whereas his contemporaries went informal, he went in the opposite direction: more formal
