The claim that standardized curriculum should be instituted for all students before they enter college is a compelling one. The reason is that colleges can use the same criteria to assess students competency before they apply for different programs in the college. However, Standardized curriculum is not tailored to students strengths and weaknesses as opposed to customized curriculum. Therefore, grades achieved according to standardized curriculum test may not be reppresentative of students skills and potential to perform well in the college. Therefore, I cannot completely agree that all students should be required to study the same national curriculum before they enter college.
First of all, the same national curriculum provides limited opportunity for students to determine their interests in the specific area where they want to persue their careers. As a result, students end up being bewildered what subjects they want to study in the college, and what career they want to persue upon graduation. In addition, since the same national curriculum includes courses from a variety of disciplines, students may not develop all the required skills and qualifications in the area they plan to specialize in college.
Secondly, not all the students will find it necessary to enter college upon graduation from high school. To illustrate, it is quite common in North America for students to take time off and travel around the world to explore their interests, and determine how they want to structure their lives, and develop their careers in the next 10 years. Some students may find their passion in art, assuming artistic and creative roles, such as make up artists, hairdresser, etc. Thus, the same national curriculum will hinder an opportunity for students to develop their skills in artistic roles.
There is, however, one modification that makes the claim more complete. The same national curriculum may not be instituted around the world since countries across the globe has different access to resources. For example, Africa may not have the same access to resources as Germany to establish the same national curriculum. While, being forced to defend an idea against opposition marks a good argument, it is not always ultimate test.
