Re: If x2 – y2 = 16 and x + y > x – y, then which one of the fol [#permalink]

Given x^2 - Y^2 = 16, this means, using factorisation,

(x+y)(x-y) = 16.

We are told, as part of the answers that x-y, can be equal to 3,4,5,6 or 7.

Hence, if your replace (x+y)(3) = 16, you can deduce x+y = 16/3, which is 5.33. [There is no mention of integers etc in the problem].

Given we are told that x+y > x-y, that means 5.33 > 4.00, which is right, and this fits the bill and can be an answer.

The other answers won't work .

x2-y2 = (x+y). (x-y) = 16
we can imagine values as (x+y) = 4 and (x-y) = 4 which confirms the equation: 4.4 = 16
Question says (x+y) > (x-Y) and to satisfy that, according to the equation, (x-y) should be less than 4
and in the options only A is less than 4.
Thus A=3 is the correct answer.
