The following appeared in a letter from the faculty committee to the president of Seatown University:
A study conducted at nearby Oceania University showed that faculty retention is higher when professors are offered free tuition at the university for their own college-aged children. Therefore, Seatown should institute a free-tuition policy for its professors for the purpose of enhancing morale among the faculty and luring new professors.
Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.
Response:
The prompt statement given by the faculty committee to the president regarding the retention of the professions, that more faculty will remain in the university if free-tution policy is established which will therefore enlarge the morale among the faculty members and they would be more coaxed as their children will study free. This tactic may be a sound proposal by faculty member but is flawed and overstated in many aspects. There are proofs which are required in order to perfectly evaluate the statement without which the argument will be undermined.
Firstly, study conducted by nearby Oceania University is transparent and accurately representation of the faculty higher retention rate or is there any reason that faculty members are teaching there. There could be other reasons due to which faculty retention rate is higher in Oceania university. For example, some faculty members are teaching for long time in university is due to the fact that University is very close to their home and access to home is very swift. Another possibility could be that faculty members are given enough salary from which they can easily afford the education but they are working there due to the fact that university facilitates more research work which they want to do and are aligned with their aims.
Secondly, what gives the reason that morale of faculty members is enhanced by the offering and establishing the free-tution policy for faculty member. There can be alternation logic behind the enlargement ad prolongation of morale of faculty members. Did study included the questions regarding the reason behind the high morale of faculty members?if no then this claim requires more evidences in order to strengthen this point. There are possibilities that faculty morale character is enhanced by another factor which is not in argument. For instance, faculty members are given regular classed in which morale and ethics are taught to them, and survey are conducted in order to implement the ethics in them. Another factor could be that faculty member are ascetics and religiously ethical followers. If that is the case then statement in prompt that free-tution will enhance the morale will be undermined.
Moreover, direct implementation of survey result of one university to another university is feasible or not is not presented in argument with required evidences. The circumstances of Oceania university could be different from Seatown university economically, financially and geographically. For examples, Oceania university is financially much more stable because it gets direct funding from the government while Saatown university operated using students fee.Free-tution ploicy in contrast will exacerbate the condition of of Season if they allowed the policy to operate in their university. For the above mentioned example if the case like such exists then argument will be weakened and require more solid proof of implementation of policy.
In conclusion , in order to strengthen the argument more coherent and logical evidences are required in order to imply that results of survey are directly implementable in other university. Without these evidences the prompt argument remains apocryphal and does not hold water.
