Explanation

The passage compares sales of items in the sunlit part of the store with sales of items in the artificially lit part of the store and concludes that since the former are greater than the latter, the presence of sunlight increases sales. The assumption underlying this argument is that the only significant difference between the two parts of the store is the presence of sunlight—otherwise, the inherent popularity of goods sold in different locations, or some other factor, might account for the increased sales. Choice B helps rule out the possibility that other factors might be involved, by showing that sales are no greater when the sunlight is taken out of the equation. Therefore it is the correct answer. Choices D and E both suggest that factors besides sunlight might explain the discrepancy between sales; therefore they weaken rather than strengthen the argument, and so are incorrect. Neither Choice A nor Choice C point to differences between the two areas of the store; therefore they are both incorrect as well.

On average NO. It depends on the difficulty of the question.

Re: QOTD # 1 That sales can be increased by the presence of sunl [#permalink]
A) It does not help for strengthening
B) When the store is open at night, the departments in the part of the store under the skylight have sales that are no higher than those of other departments: that is, if sunlight does not affect, there is a difference in sales. This means, that sunlight affects.
C) irrelevant information
D) This actually undermines
E) This actually undermines

B - classic answer choice - No cause -> no effect.

To Strengthen:

1) Block an alternate cause
2) Show that the cause leads to the effect in other situation(s)
3) Show that without the cause the effect goes away as well.

Choice E mentions that other stores also have higher sales in departments under the skylight which shows that the cause leads to the effect in other situations so why is this incorrect?

That sales can be increased by the presence of sunlight within a store has been shown by the experience of the only Savefast department store with a large skylight.

E) The departments in the part of the store under the skylight are the departments that generally have the highest sales in other stores in the Save fast chain.

E is wrong because it does not tell us anything about the ONLY store, and the relative sales, that has the skylight. E compares the only store we care about with the others in the rest of Save chain.

Hope now is more clear to you Sir
