Re: QOTD # 11 The plant called the scarlet gilia can have either [#permalink]

To answer the question we should rephrase the last sentence, which states when do each color pollinate, so that to answer the question. That is when do the 2 types of color don't get pollinated. The answer choice D does this. That's why this is the answer.

Hi can someone please help, I don't really understand the last sentence: To try to show that this
pattern of pollination by colors exists, scientists recently covered some scarlet gilia
flowers only at night and others only by day: plants with red flowers covered at night
became pollinated; plants with white flowers covered by day became pollinated.

Scientists hypotheses:
Hum --> feeds by day --> attracted to red. So how can red become pollinated at night?
Hawks --> feed at night --> attracted to white. How can white become pollinated during day?

Is it because the plants are covered so the Hum and Hawks can't tell if it is actually red or white? So if red is covered the Hawks have no preference at night?

Can someone explain to me the passage ?
I understand that humming is attracted to white in the morning, so when they are covered at night ( a thing was put on them ) how did they become pollinated at night and they are covered ?
Same for white ?
