Re: QOTD #2 If Perth is the only city with over 1 million reside [#permalink]

Australians who live in cities with less than 1 million people or rural areas in western area = X

Australians who live in cities with less than 1 million people or rural areas = Y

%age = X/Y*100

Australians who live in cities with less than 1 million people or rural areas in western area =X
here in western are total 9% of population live out of which 6% belongs to Perth, which is more than 1 million in population
thus total Australians who live in cities with less than 1 million people or rural areas in western area = 9% - 6% = 3%

X= 3% of 17.8 million = 534000
Y= 42% of 17.8 million = 7476000

%age = X/Y*100 = 534000/7476000 * 100 = 7.14% thus B

From the first graph you can see that Perth accounts for 6% of Australia's population. The second graph tells you that all of Western Australia accounts for 9% of Australia's population. So the population of Western Australia outside of Perth accounts for 9% – 6% = 3% of Australia's population. The first graph tells you that 42% of Australia's population lives in cities with less than 1 million people or rural areas. So the percent of Australians who live in cities with less than 1 million people or rural areas that live in Western Australia is

\(\frac{3}{42}* 100= \frac{1}{14} = about 7%\)

B is the answer
