explanation Please

Economic depression -> so less income.
Cost of bread increased, but low socioeconomic class increased bread consumption
To resolve this situation: some expenditure should decrease and expense on bread increase;
Option D: money spent on costly food went down and money spent on bread (wheat grains) went up.

(A) Does not explain researcher's findings

(B) Does not explain researcher's findings

(C) When incomes decrease, people are typically forced to spend a larger proportion of their income on basic needs, such as food and housing; too broad: one can conceive that a price of meat could increase and demand for them too, but not necessarily bread.

(D) People who suddenly cannot afford more expensive foods, such as meat, must compensate by consuming more inexpensive foods, such as grains. this is more specific than the option C , thus, this is the correct answer

(E) During a depression, people in the lowest socioeconomic class will continue to spend the same amount of money on food as they did before the depression began. One does not know how they spend - on bread or other good.

If anyone has the GMAT as a point of reference, this would be really helpful to gain insight on - how similar, would you say, these question types are to the GMAT's Verbal Critical Reasoning questions?

The CR in both exams is identical.

They test the same concepts, they have the same architecture to write and test your critical thinking.

Hope now is more clear
