"We can usually learn much more from people whose views we share than from people whose
views contradict our own."; disagreement can cause stress and inhibit learning."
Learning is a persistent process. We always obtain knowledge whether we are in agreement or disagreement during a course of discussion to which our views are aligned or not. But, I am not in agreement with the statement that we learn usually when our views are aligned with the views of others. It’s true sometimes but not all the times. That’s a fact that sometimes disagreement can cause stress, but to establish my view, I will present some examples moving forward.
We don’t have to go too far, just few years back President Barack Obama got reelected for his second presidential term. During the campaign process, I remember some of the reputed media houses, news channels and some of the reputed universities invited both the opponents Mr. Romney and Mr. Obama for the presidential debate and during the discussion two have been asked questions and their respective views. When we are involved in these kinds of conversations and discussions, it gives us an opportunity to learn from our opponents with whom we don’t share our views or say our views are not aligned with their views.
When we talk to our opponents who oppose our views, its gives an opportunity to broaden up our views. Sometimes we get ideas from our opponents whom we miss sometimes, while talking to people with whom our views are aligned or inline.
Similarly when any debate happens to amend a law or to bring a new legislation in a democratic country, when discussion happens between political parties, it opens up a whole new prospect for that new legislation. It’s a human tendency that when we work on an idea to which our views are aligned, we always look for maximum pros and minimum cons, but talking to opponents or say taking part in discussion with people who oppose our view, we sometimes come to know important cons also, which we missed.
This is true that sometimes, these discussion lead to argument and causes stress, so we need to be careful before getting into any discussion with our opponent. Also we should keep this thing in our minds very clear that, we should respect views of our opponents also. If we keep this kind of attitude, then they are less chances of getting stressed, in fact we will coming out feeling happy that we got a whole new idea or an extra knowledge or learning.
