I have the principle to NOT lie to my friends. However, this is not possible 100% of the time. For several reasons or practicality

So sometimes the principles are sacrificed to various situations or expediencies.


The process is recognized or individuated and we give it a misleading or misnomer word such as pragmatic decision but in the end is something that we are not willing to do but forced by the context.

Platitude means flat, cliche... doesnt make sense

Rationalize means to attempt to explain or justify (behavior or an attitude) with logical reasons. This fits perfectly.

Sometimes, people abandon/ditch their principles because of convenience and justify it as "pragmatic decision". Therefore, rationalize fits the most.
