Superficial differences between the special problems and techniques of the physical sciences and those of the biological sciences are sometimes cited as evidence for the _____of biology and for the claim that the methods of physics are therefore not adequate to biological inquiry.

My approach to this question is getting the clue from the second half of the question. Here, "methods of physics are therefore not adequate to biological inquiry", gives us sufficient idea that we must treat biology and physics as separate entities,

Hence Autonomy is the right answer.

Vitalism - (D) Vitalism is the belief that living things are alive because of a special "life force" or energy
Kind of tempting to narrow this answer, but here if you check the definition of Vitalism, there's nothing about "life force" of Biology as a field we were discussing here.

Purposiveness - Also tempting to answer this but we aren't debating WHY biology must exist. We are specifically debating why Physics and Biology must be separate from one another, and that biology as field must be independent.

Bbsolescence and Irrelevance are totally pointless options in my opinion, we can do away with these because we aren't talking about the pointless-ness of Biology as a field at all.
