Some students might look at this and automatically see that the two numbers must be 4 and 5.
However, we can also solve this algebraically
Since it's unclear which number (x or y) is greater, let's just say the two numbers are n and n+1 (this satisfies the condition that the difference between the numbers is 1)
If the sum is 9, we can write: n + (n + 1) = 9
Solve to get: n = 4, which means n + 1 = 5
So the two numbers are 4 and 5
We get:
QUANTITY A: The product of x and y = (4)(5) = 20
QUANTITY B: TWICE the quotient of \(\frac{81}{x+y}\) = \((2)(\frac{81}{4+5})= (2)(\frac{81}{9})= (2)(9)\) = 18
Answer: A

The prompt tells us that x-y=1 and x+y=9. To solve for x, we can simply add the two equations together => x=5. Plug that into either equation and you'll find that y=4.
From there, it's simply a matter of plugging in values. 5*4=20. The quotient of Quantity B is 9, so twice the quotient is 18. 20>18, so Quantity A is greater.
