D, ironically is the less tricky among the others

(D) The first is a speculation that the author wishes to justify. The second is a consequence that would result if that speculation is not true.

Off the first part ...off the second because is a direct consequence of the first one

The first is NOT a speculation whatsoever. Basically a speculation is an assumption that could be true or not. The dark matter and the first sentence is a FACT that the author state and we do know , for the argument at stake, is true. regardless that in the real world or in science is true as well
